Split
The correct preparation determines the taste and effect of your Pu-erh tea.
Here you will learn step by step how to prepare Pu-Erh tea traditionally using the Gong Fu Cha method or simply in the Western style – including tips on water, steeping time and temperature.
Preparation: Tea, water & utensils
For the perfect Pu-erh preparation you need:
- Tea: 5–6 g Sheng or Shou Pu-Erh for 100–150 ml water
- Water: soft, freshly boiled (95–100 °C)
- Utensils: Gaiwan or small pot, tea bowl, tea tray, tea pitcher
Do not use distilled water – a little mineral content enhances flavors.
However, water that is too hard can increase bitterness.

The Gong Fu Cha Method – Traditional Tea Ritual
Gong Fu Cha (功夫茶) means “tea with skill and devotion”.
This Chinese method uses many short infusions to develop the depth and balance of the Pu-erh tea.
Step-by-step instructions
- Weigh out the tea: 5–6 g for 100–150 ml.
- To awaken the tea: briefly pour hot water over it (3 seconds) and then pour it out.
- First infusion: Let steep for 5-10 seconds.
- Further infusions: Increase the steeping time by approximately 5 seconds each time (up to 10 infusions).
- Enjoy: The color, aroma, and taste change with each infusion.
The Gong Fu Cha method is not just about preparation – it is about mindfulness, slowing down, and enjoyment.
Alternative: Preparation in the Western style
For those who prefer a simpler approach, Pu-Erh can also be prepared using the classic Western method:
- Amount of tea: 3 g per 250 ml
- Water temperature: 95–100 °C
- Brewing time: 2–4 minutes
This method delivers a strong, consistent flavor – perfect for everyday use or larger quantities.
